The Mayflower Corps was first formed in 1973. Starting
life as an all girls marching band, which was originally part of
the Billericay Girls Brigade, the Mayflower girls competed very
successfully on the British Youth Band Association competing circuit.
In 1985 fighting quite strong opposition from parents at the time,
Mayflower decided to introduce boys into the Corps, this proved
a highly successful move being able now to compete against many
of the stronger Corps. |

In 1980 Mayflower became instrumental in bringing Drum
Corps to the UK from the USA, along with Dagenham Crusaders and
a few other high profile names they introduced Drum Corps to Britain,
preferring the more flamboyant style of the American Drum Corps.
Mayflower then emerged as one of the leading Drum Corps in the UK,
many times a Drum Corps Finalist, with their best ever results in
1993 and 1995, finishing third in the Open Class Championships.
In 1995 the Corps competed in the Drum Corps International circuit,
travelling through 8 different US States, culminating with a performance
at the Summer Music Games in Buffalo, an experience that will live
with Mayflower members for many years.

In 1996 due to many age outs and a change in the
Drum Corps activity throughout the Country, Mayflower lost many
of its older members. Mayflower was the first Corps to have its
own "B" Corps, as it was then known, this was now the focus for
Mayflower, using this younger group to begin the process of re-building
Mayflower. Mayflower has continued to grow, and this concerted effort
is taking Mayflower back to being one of the top Drum Corps once
again in the UK. |
